Getting a puncture to a tyre is always a nuisance, and they often seem to happen at the most inconvenient times. There are many causes including driving over debris in the road such as nails or hedgerow cuttings, or driving into a kerb stone at speed.Understandably most people would like to have a puncture repaired rather than replace the complete tyre, especially if the tyre is otherwise in sound condition. The criteria for repairing a puncture, rather than recommending tyre replacement is based on a number of factors and a full inspection by an experienced tyre technician is required. At Hereford Tyres we will always look to carry out a repair, should this be the customers preferred course of action and the tyre is in good condition. An inspection will be carried out to assess the tyre condition. All aspects of the work are carried out in line with British Standards. A repair cannot be recommended if the tyre fails on any of the following criteria:Illegal tread depth (below 1.6mm across the central ¾ of the tyre tread throughout the entire circumference) Run flat damage - breakdown of the tyre's structural integrity Secondary damage - caused by the injuring object Ageing/deterioration of tyre rubber Bead damage Exposed cordsFaulty/poor previous repairs If the damage to the tyre exists within the central ¾ area  and the scale of the damage is 6mm in diameter or less we should be able to carry out a satisfactory repair there and then. Only a special vulcanised plug patch should be used which repairs the tyre to the required standard. Don't ever let anyone other than a properly qualified person attempt to repair your tyre - if the repair fails at speed it could lead to very serious consequences. Where the damaged area is larger than 6mm or has resulted in the tyre being split or gouged, on safety grounds a repair cannot be recommended and a replacement tyre will need to be fitted. Damage to or near to the sidewall is more serious as the sidewall is the area of the tyre which carries most of the load and endures much more flex. A repair patch applied in this area is therefore much more likely to fail due to its increased movement. It is important that you do not drive on a flat tyre in order to maximise the chance of repairing it. This is due to the damage caused to the side wall if the vehicle is driven when the tyre is not properly inflated. Sometimes, even when the damage is in the repairable area and falls within the size restrictions for repair a replacement tyre will still be required due to the damage to the sidewall of the tyre.  Where a minor repair has not been possible and a new tyre needs to be fitted it may still be possible for the tyre to have a major repair. This is especially relevant with more expensive tyres. Major repairs are carried out in a factory setting using specialist equipment with a typical turnaround of 7-14 days.  For further information or advice on puncture repairs or tyres see www.hereftyres.co.uk or call us on 01432 269212.
